079-1 PDF Hydromedusa: Aqueous Architectures for use in WET Space
Mutamorphosis: challenging Art and Science, Prague, 8 Oct 2007

(Paper) By introducing ‘Hydromedusa’: a hybrid performance lab that proposes aquatic arts and biomimetic strategies in the development of innovative architecture, philosophy and choreography in weightless environment training (WET) spaces, this paper considers the potential body shocks associated with future long-duration habitation of outer space in combination with predicative imagination and creative design to respond to some of these challenges and illustrate how artistic approaches could contribute to innovative countermeasures with follow on research... www.mutamorphosis.org

079-1 PDF Luna Gaia: Closed Loop Habitat for the Moon
Australian Space Science Conference, Sydney, Australia, 25 Sep 2007

(Poster 60 x 90) Dr. James Chartres1, Dr. Sarah Jane Pell2*
During the International Space University (ISU) Summer Session Program 2006 (SSP06) held in Strasbourg, France 32 graduate students and space professionals from 12 different countries supported by space experts from around the world worked on a interdisciplinary project for the development of a lunar habitat mission design... Recommendations are made pertaining to the systems architecture, engineering processes, research and development, and precursor missions required to achieve this vision by 2030. The proposed design solutions focuses on proven and innovative solutions to address the requirements for crew health, a feasible working environment and long term sustainability... The project vision is also consistent with the preservation of life and responsible evolution into the solar system.

072-1 PDF Body Shock: from Subspace to Outerspace
Seminar, School of Anatomy & Human Biology, The University of Western Australia, 23 Jan 2007

(Powerpoint) This presentation considers the potential body shocks associated with future long-duration habitation off-Earth. It introduces known principia, technologies and environmental factors affecting human health in spaceflight and underwater. Alterations to the human heart, brain, and vestibular function are described. The comparative effects, and risks, these factors pose to human performance, behavior, adaptation and survival are discussed in light of preexisting treatments, and conventional and innovative future countermeasures.

072-2 PDF The Luna Gaia Affect
2nd International Space & Society Conference, ESA-ESTEC, The Netherlands, 1 March 2007

(Presentation) Exploring the philosophical implications of future human Lunar settlement based on the responsible framework proposed by the co-authored ISU SSP06 Team project 'Luna Gaia: a closed loop habitat for the Moon' 2006 and the recent Global Lunar Exploration Strategy announcement of the same year.

051-1 PDF Aquabatics as new works of Live Art
PhD Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Submitted 2005

(Part One) In brief, Part One (Theorem) proposes the states and conditions of Aquabatics including the functional relationship of being Aquabatic and levels of existence as new works of Live art. Over seven short synopses I introduce Aquabatics in relation to BETMAPS (Biological, Ecological, Technological, Metaphysical, Aquatic, Political and Societal) systems to reveal the design objectives and considerations behind developing Aquabatic inquiry at this time in history. The intention of the format is firstly to describe the particular manifestations of conditions and states that may construct a sense of Aquabatics (noun), followed by an exploration of Aquabatics (verb): the practice of being specific to this knowledge.

051-2 PDF Aquabatics as new works of Live Art
PhD Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Submitted 2005

(Part Two) Part Two (Praxis) examines a selection of seven Aquabatic performances and several associated collaborative research laboratories (including one still in creative development stage). These works are presented as a collection of individual meditations and critiques. They consider the development of a body of knowledge and the points of intersection and differentiation within the field of Live arts. These discussions begin to describe the ideas of the research modality, the context critical for optimum performance and also propose these recommendations for future research.

051-3 PDF Aquabatics as new works of Live Art
PhD Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Submitted 2005

(Part Three) Part Three (Epilogue - “Visions for a Sub Culture of the Future”) gives a brief and overarching synopsis of the research findings to date and, where appropriate, references parallel performance states, conditions and theories both empathetic and contrary to the principals investigated. It conclude by proposing new research projects in terms of the BETMAPS system that broadly identifies key considerations for future Aquabatics and make specific recommendations for future projects and research avenues. It concludes with a list of Credits, Acknowledgements, References and Appendicies.
